Description

Ride the Divide is an inspiring feature documentary about the world's toughest mountain bike race. This 'under the radar' event traverses over 2700 miles along the Continental Divide in the Rocky Mountains. The film weaves the story of three characters' experiences with immense mountain beauty and small-town culture as they attempt to pedal from Banff, Canada to a small, dusty crossing on the Mexican border. Mike, a 40-year old family man who uses this challenge to chart a new course in life; Matthew, a leader in extreme endurance racing who's competing for his 5th time; and Mary, the 1st female rider to race this route, will set out to accomplish what very few have been able to. Over the course of a few weeks they'll attempt to climb over 200,000 vertical feet over the Rocky Mountains. That's the equivalent of ascending Mount Everest from sea level seven times. They'll experience mental breakdowns, treacherous snow, hellacious blisters, and total fatigue. Above all, they'll race with no support and at times in total isolation. The tests of endurance and introspection throughout this powerful film prompts us to reflect on our inner desires to live life to the fullest.

Inspirational look into perhaps the most extreme ultra race of any type. Great photography and stories are well told. Amazing what the human body can do if the mental side is strong. Highly recommend you see this one.
  • Beautiful scenery and a good idea, but a flawed execution

Preface; I'm not a bicyclist, so I don't have that tie to the material. While the scenery was gorgeous and the interviewy bits interesting, there's a lot of this movie I didn't find terribly compelling. It doesn't follow one person all the way through, and it never stayed with any of the people long enough for me get a real feel for what they were going through. It's easy to tell that's it's physically and emotionally draining, but very little in this created any sort of emotional connection for me. My take; there are better things to watch, although it may be just what you want if you're into the sport.

I have watched this movie several times, usually while on the stationary bike trainer. I have found it very motivational.

Can someone please go back and do a documentary on little Larry ! This is not a normal race. It's a race against you and your limits. It's an underground race with no sponsors, no paycheck and no ticker tape parade. It's a GREAT documentary. Footage, story and scenery is outstanding. Great job to all who made this happen

If you want to watch a bad a** mountain biking movie about the toughest race in the world with some very elite Riders, this is not the movie. Not at all what i expected. First off, there was only 1 person in this race that had any business being there, Mat, everyone else was in way over their head. Matthew needed some more competition, in fact he was in a completely different category all together. the rest of the riders just whined about how long and boring it was and how harsh the conditions are. it was as if they had never done a single night of camping, or hard mountain biking in their life. Of course its tough, you are riding over 2k miles, what did you expect! Matt was just having the time of his life, while everyone else was falling apart mentally. Granted the girl Mary was one tough human being, but i was expecting to see 15 elite athletes competing in a hardcore race. and instead there is just 1 guy racing against himself and a bunch of mediocre, recreational riders just trying to survive the race. Just trying to complete, not compete. there should be some kind of qualifier before that race, it seemed like anybody could have signed up, with zero experience. On a different note, the cinematography was great, really awesome footage of the countryside. Great camera work, and they captured some cool wildlife. They did a good job tracking the different riders also.

A totaly awesome movie! I just wanted to get on my bike and join them . . . then the reality of 65 years and not being in the shape to last one day with them set in. One thing I appreciated was that there was no profanity. If you love cycling, you will love this movie. So out you go!!!
  • You must watch this!!!

This movie was WONDERFUL. This is one of the most amazing races in the world and it was documented very well. I've watched it 3 times now, and plan on following the race online this year. Maybe one day I'll ride it. If you ride at all, you will enjoy this one.
  • Epic Story

I first learned about the Tour Divide when listening to the MTBcast podcast that Joe Polk produces. This film does a wonderful job and highlighting the personalities that endure this epic race and the hardships they endure to achieve their dreams. This race becomes more about friendship and personal perseverence and less about racing. If you are a cyclist or mountain biker, give this one a try.

Received this movie for my birthday and watched it immediately...the scenery is incredible, if you like the West...you'll love this movie. The bike riders are inspiring, gives you a great sense of what it's like to bike over 2,700 miles. Whether you like to ride around the block, centuries or multi-day events...you need to watch this movie. Get on your bike!
