Description

A grand-scale adventure as only Akira Kurosawa could make one, The Hidden Fortress stars the inimitable Toshiro Mifune as a general charged with guarding his defeated clan’s princess (a fierce Misa Uehara) as the two smuggle royal treasure across hostile territory. Accompanying them are a pair of bumbling, conniving peasants who may or may not be their friends. This rip-roaring ride is among the director’s most beloved films and was a primary influence on George Lucas’s Star Wars. The Hidden Fortress delivers Kurosawa’s trademark deft blend of wry humor, breathtaking action, and compassionate humanity.

A princess is on the run, with the families fortune, after her kingdom was defeated. A powerful samurai accompanies her escape to a place where she can rebuild her kingdom. What makes this film stand out is that the story is told through 2 peasants that happen to be in the wrong place and the right time thought the film; much like R2D2 and C3PO in the Star Wars franchise.

One of the best films ever made, Kurosawa was the first to put so many great stories to film, so many pieces have been borrowed for other great films but this is the original. But Kurosawa also has a gift that few directors have for telling the story so well and capturing the audience. Also recommend Ikuru and Seven Samurai as well as many other Kurosawa movies.

One of my all-time favorites. Thanks for the great deal, iTunes! Star Wars fans- now you can see how the original film was inspired by this movie. Kurosawa was truly one of the great masters in cinema history, and if you haven’t seen any of his films this is certainly one to start with. Some of his movies inspired remakes such as The Magnificent Seven, and A Fistful of Dollars.
