Description

Academy Award-winning director Akira Kurosawa ("The Seven Samurai," "Ran"), whose cinematic genius has inspired such classic films as "Star Wars" and "The Magnificent Seven," presents his 28th, and most personal, film. Visually splendid, Kurosawa's film consists of eight powerful vignettes, one of which features acclaimed director Martin Scorsese as painter Vincent Van Gogh. "Breathtaking... dazzling," says The New York Times.

I can't find any of the other classics like Yojimbo and Sanjuro. Is there any way that they could be uploaded?

A beautiful movie--visually breathtaking in places, disturbing in other segments, very intriguing. Seeing Martin Scorsese as Van Gogh was a bit of a stretch (too much Scorsese, even with his ear lopped off), but a fascinating segment.

Kurosawa is one of the most important directors of the last centruy. Why aren't the rest of his films on itunes? The movie RAN is fabulous. So are the Samurai movies. Dreams is a series of short films starting with the directors babyhood and moving to old age. For those who did not like this format try RAN.
  • Huge disappointment

I maybe expected too much. But got absolutely nothing. I expected cogent, beautiful, pieces of memory or commentary. But got only cliched, badly filmed, utterly boring dross. A few of the pieces have some artistic merit. But even those are badly marred. The "though" or "philosophy", expressed is mundane. Some of the pieces are visually ugly. An immense disappointment. I stopped watching after 5 "episodes".

I highly recommend that you watch this on a screen big enough to actually enjoy the scope of the cinematography employed. The movie is still breathtaking on a smaller screen but it is stunning on something larger. Because it is subtitled, I recommend watching it more than once so you can get both the story and the visual presentation of the story. This is a movie I keep in my permanent collection. The stories are strong and, the one that touched me the most left an unanswered ending. I believe this is brilliant because it allows the viewer to make the movie their own, or more importantly to personally identify with it based on their experiences and nature. I cannot recommend this movie more.

Dreams is a remarkable work. It is one of my favorite Kurosawa film. The vignettes are little morality tales--dreams for our time. Buy it, rent it, but do not pass up this experience.
