  • Cool camera angles but poor story line.

I liked the idea of only seeing the movie through people video taping the events, but the movie had a terrible ending. They should have ended it differently and not so abruptly. The filming girl and the cousin should have had some interaction after the extra events, destruction, and death. Also there was no aftermath information either and they don’t explain how the city folks or FBI handled it. Overall it was a waste of time and money, but cool idea.

While in this movie Dane DeHaan looks a bit like a dangling orangutan in his flying harness, it is nice to see him on screen after the death of the Spiderman reboot series. The movie has a good premise and, if you can handle the first person camera thing, its an okay film. There is a hook for a sequel but I doubt it will be made. DeHaan, Russell, and Jordan all did a great job.
  • Hard to take seriously

The concept was entertaining and there were some creative shots here and there, but, for being a found-footage film, they didn’t do a good enough job of justifying the main characters rolling the camera most of the time, which prevented me from taking anything that was going on seriously. This would have been fine if the characters were a little more light-hearted, but Dane Dehaan’s character was so dark and annoying that I couldn’t even enjoy it as a fun film. The result was me cringing at bad CGI and a whiny character while sort of enjoying the playfulness of Michael B. Jordan’s character and some superpower scenes. Good movie to watch if you catch it playing on TV.

Technically this movie is well-put together. It really is cool watching kids with psychic powers do stuff on found footage. It makes it feel realistic and they don't overdo the effects. HOWEVER, the writing is awful. It runs like it was written by committee—a HUGE committee with high turnover and two or three nephews of the studio owner who think they know everything coming in and messing up the contributions of the few people with actual talent. First of all, three kids find aliens and get psychic powers. I've seen this trope so many times by now, even I could write it. Second, the characters. You have one kid who goes evil. He's scrawny, unpopular, and abused by his parents. You have the hero, who is handsome, athletic, and has little else in the way of personality. Then you have the other athletic kid who dies at the start of the second act. Guess which one is black. I mean, at first I was psyched. You don't see depictions of white kids and black kids hanging out that often. But then I realized that he was just there so he could get murdered. So... That was disappointing. And last, the entire final act of the movie was just the final of Akira in live-action. That's it. I don't know how they didn't get sued, it was so blatant. So, if you have never seen Akira, and you are like, totally OK with subtle racism, and you liked the Twilight novels, this movie is probably going to be the best movie ever. If not, take a pass. You're just going to come out the other end disappointed and bitter.
  • Good but flawed

It is the common cautionary tale of power run amok. However, it's conclusions were reminicent of "Les Miserables" "To know all is to forgive all'. Which I find as a touch of BS. The camera footage narrative is a bit overdone. Blog Girl was removed very quickly. A lot of scenes in the trailer did not make it on screen. I would have rated it 3.5, but had to round up. I did not waste my money, but my 'rotten tomatoe' score would have been about 10 points lower. Still, better than a lot of the stuff on screen today.
