I'm so thankful I took a chance and rented this movie on a whim. A pretty by-the-book chick-flick at the surface, the film blossoms into an unexpectedly sincere and heartfelt treat. This endearing, character-driven film about two sisters who desperately need what the other has does the little things so right, which is why it works so well. While it so easily could have been a story about a stupid bimbo and her 'poor me' sister, Diaz and Collette manage to bring a second dimension to their roles, a feat not many would have been able to accomplish. Their chemistry works effortlessly, and even though much of their screen time is apart, they are so clearly present in each others' thoughts. The special relationship between sisters is so indescribable, but this film manages to encompass it so well. It's not often when a movie manages to be better than the sum of its parts, but here it is. Its praise is well deserved and earned.
