Description

Jennifer Aniston, Catherine Keener, Frances McDormand and Joan Cusak star in the story of four best friends whose comfortable lives are thrown off balance as the realities of early middle age set in. It paints a painfully hilarious portrait of modern life in the class-sensitive West side of Los Angeles. Written and directed by Nicole Holofcener (Lovely and Amazing), Friends With Money was the Opening Night Selection at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and is being hailed as "Terrific" (Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times), "Acutely perceptive and slyly quick-witted" (Allison Benedikt, Chicago Tribune).

Don't be fooled, the best part of this movie is the trailer. The premise is interesting, the characters begin believably and the first 15 minutes promise much. But then you start to get it, as your suspension of disbelief fades fast to naught: this is a slow ride to nowhere. In an attempt to feign direction, one vapid cliche after another is thrown at the increasingly despondent viewer, like air-punches from a beaten and falling boxer, and the effect is similar - your remaining emotional options are pity or disgust. David Ansen of Newsweek (see "Fresh" review above) clearly didn't sit through the entire thing, as he counted only four of the seven friends, and described as "delicious" a plate that is nothing more than bland, with a sour aftertaste. Save your money - don't do it!

This movie as a terrific character study of people struggling through life. It does a great job of reminding us how everyone is struggling in some way, regardless of appearances.
  • Don't listen to the other reviewers.

Friends With Money is a pull-no-punches, honest look at the pain that comes with everyday life. Every character in the movie is relatable in some way. It's one of my favorites.
  • Vapid & painful

The only reason I'm giving this 2 stars is the presence of Jason Isaacs & even his character was painful to watch. Life in LA is the biggest downer per this movie.

Vapid and completely unworthy of Jennifer Aniston. The horrible ending only highlights the whole film. Come on Jennifer, some discretion in choosing movies - or is it just for the money?
