Description

In the tradition of Big Night and Chocolat comes this "delicious romantic comedy!"* that won over 10 international film awards and captured the hearts of moviegoers around the world. Martha is a single woman who lives for one passion: cooking. The head chef at a chic restaurant, Martha has no time for anything - or anyone - else. But, Martha's solitary life is shaken when a fateful accident brings her sister's eight-year-old daughter, Lina, to her doorstep. As Martha struggles to care for her headstrong niece, the restaurant hires a charming and carefree Italian chef named Mario. Suspicious of Mario's intentions, Martha slowly discovers that he has a special recipe for living - one that will touch her home and her heart. With its tantalizing blend of comedy, romance and food, Mostly Martha is a movie to savor. *Leah Rozen, People Magazine

This movie is superb in every way. The german language never sounded so nice. It's dialog is great and there's a lovely dynamic between aunt and niece. The wonderfully complex Martha character, and the way Martina Gedeck plays it, is definitely a high light. Of course we can't forget the charming Sergio Castellitto who was exceptionally charming this time. I would say this movie is for anyone who considers them self a foodie, loves cultures and languages, or anyone who likes alternative 'romantic comedies'.

Outstanding movie! I first watched it on videotape over 6 years ago and still come back to it. The story, pace, acting and especially attention to detail is wonderful. Ever wonder why chef's wear a towel in addition to an apron? Too bad this doesn't come with a cook book for all the great food you see prepared during the movie. The movie works on so many levels, my wife and I keep coming back to it. Easily one of my top 5 favorites. The feel good results of watching remind me of "Somethings Got To Give".

I have not seen the movie before, and decided to buy it based on the reviews. I am glad I did. I will have my family and friends over to watch it! it is a very nice drama (yes, it is not a comedy), very well made into a movie. The main reason for writing my comment is that I had no problem at all with the size of the subtitles, and I watched in my iTouch (maybe bigger screen than other ipods?). Yes, I wish I could understand German, and that I didn't need the subtitles, but such is life :) . It is a very nice movie and I would recommend anyone to watch it.

Mostly Martha (Bella Martha) is one of the most moving, beautiful movies I have ever seen. I attempted to watch the American remake (No Reservations) recently and I simply could not stomach it. One needs only to see the opening shots of both to see which one is better. The German Martha's delivery is so much more sincere than that of Catherine Zeta-Jones who sounds... like she's acting... badly. No Reservations seems as though it lifted the subtitles from Mostly Martha and made it the script. Like, it's a literal remake, not an adaptation in any sense. I love, love, love this movie, though I can't really say it would be any good for iPod viewing if you don't understand German. Please add more German films! :)

This movie is one of those that stay with you for years. It is heartbreaking and heart-warming at the same time. The developing relationship between Martha and her niece is simply beautifully told. Nothing is “shouted” at you in the form of over the top feelings or forced humour. It simply is. When the American remake was announced, my friend and I looked at each other and went: OH NO! I have not seen “No reservations”, and I never will. You simply cannot replace Mostly Martha and the brilliant cast with glossy Hollywood stars. I just do not believe it will work.

The actress who plays Martha, Martina Gedeck, performed a fantastic role in this film. She stays true to her character to the end! I also love the chemistry between she and actor Sergio Castellitto. I watched "No Reservations"(the American version) and although I found it sweet and funny, it's no comparison to this orginal version.
