Description

The small Boston law firm of Donnell & Associates is led by Bobby Donnell, a young, passionate lawyer struggling to make a name for his new practice. After a challenging first year, where Bobby and fellow attorneys Lindsay Dole, Ellenor Frutt, Eugene Young, and Jimmy Berluti, spent more time representing undeniably guilty clients instead of innocent victims, things are beginning to look up. But along with the increasing number of high-profile cases, the firm is still besieged by drug dealers, murderers, and petty criminals, all in need of a good defense. And as their caseload grows, so too does the practice, eventually becoming Donnell, Young, Dole & Frutt, Attorneys at Law.

As a foreigner living in the US, it is almost tiring to try to understand law terminology without the subtitles/captions. Is it really to hard to make all the movies with subtitles? This is the most mind-evoking show. And can't purchase it. Won't purchase it w/o the captions. :(

The Practice is and remains one of David Kelly's premier works. No doubt this and other legal series genre grew within him during his days spent in balmy falls and icy winters in a Massachussetts law school (Boston College I believe). But of all the so-called "legal thriller" or related genre, I remain totally convinced that The Practice is premier--not just for its fictiional plausability, or its depth in characters, but with its unique plots and fairly well crafted trial law scenery. There are many things I would have changed to make it even MORE plausible--like the judges, for example, and their dialogue--they could havr and should have been made to both look and sound more like real judges. Most judges are former prosecutors because political power that initially appoints judges simply do not trust anyone else except prosecutors who will help the politicians sell their "tough on crime" persona's to a fearful public. On the one hand it is understandable because we have idiots out there who steal and hurt mere children because their hormones are out of whack and there is no fairness or even effort at fairness with the availability of healthcare. We have sadistic fiends out there like Ted Bundy and the Freeway Killer and the like who truly prey upon human suffering like bloodlusting demons and society understandably wants to simply get rid of such fiends and not hear one more twisted word out of their mouths; because there can be no words which explain what these monsters desire to do and eventually accomplish if not caught and locked up or executed and put out of their own misery and our own. But that doesn't lead to a good selection of judges. Being a judge means being fair. It means the willingness to take risks to ensure that the TRUTH is discovered because truth, not our desire for prejudice--what is PRE-JUDICIAL--but rather that which isn't focused solely upon what purports to appease our fears, but rather what leads to Justice--and Justice always brings something so very precious in its wake--PEACE. Peace isn't just the absence of conflict, as Dr. Albert Einstein rightly observed, but it is the presence of Justice. We need good judges and they need to remain fiercely independent of politics and not become rubber stamps for the legislature or the executive branches but a full and equal partner in this tripartite experiment called America. But this show, "the Practice," looks and smells much like what real law practice looks and smells like. I ought to know. I've been there. This series ran aground way too fast and it too quickly deviated from its initial roots--the roots that had many people truly tuning in and investing themselves emotionally into the show. David Kelly deserves a rounding ovation for this series. Let us hope his lovely wife, Michelle Pfeiffer, can somehow inspire within him a new series that hangs on and on and which doesn't turn into the L.A. Law disaster that had Arnold Becker falling out of roofs into the offices of senioor partners, and the like, but rather, a weekyl drama of the the daily reality of modern law practice, where Type "A" egos clash, sometimes for justice--and those are the heroes and the best stories to tell--but all-too-often they unfortunately clash for the sake of their overly large egos, in their desires to be worshipped almost as gods. I know many of them and some even have "Inn of Court" hanging on their trophy walls. This is why in 1L we start out with a shared endeavor because we're studyig the law together and that is noble and we feel privileged to be part of something so noble. Then, as John Grisham rightly and insightfully observes in his fictional work "The Rainmaker," , by 3L "you're lucky if you're not murdered in your sleep." One aspect that could truly become a great series is to write one that centers on LAW SCHOOL itself, where judges and lawyers and legislators and governors and even presidents and kings and queens and other princes in society are educated. Much is wrong about how we educate in the law. Much is also very right about it. Time will tell. But Law is about governing asnd it is vital that mankind finally attains to the spiritual truth conveyed by the inspired prophet Jeremiah (Ch 10: Verse 23) when he conveys: it truly "is not intended for mankind to direct even his own step." Law more than anything else proves our inability to govern ourselves. We remain too selfish, too unjust, too prejudical, too afraid of the Truth that sets us free if only we would become willing to listen! In that I am NOT neutral. because I do know the ropes, as one who has truly walked the halls of justice,--even if it is "so-called." We know and understand that The Practice is truly the best series on that subject yet to cross our television or entertainment paths. I intend to own every show the owners of rights will agree to release for public sale. You should too. Aside from its imperfections, it does much more that is right, warts and all. I am grateful this series is available here at ITunes. I hope my relationship with ITunes improves on alternative grounds. APPLE, INC and ITUNES.COM has a skyscraper fulll of lawyers, and many of them are fierce and talented. But this simple lawyer might just bring what this series often portrays and everyone can appreciate the reality of the contest between David and Goliiath. I hope that doesn't happen. I hope we can become friends instead. I sure do love this series--The Practice. If you've not seen it download some of the shows and sit back and see a real masterpiece of a legal drama series. They still have yet to get any better and this is now well over 15 years old!
