Description

A different kind of American independent horror film, Toad Road is a hallucinatory and hypnotic odyssey through mutating realities, drug use, urban legends, and nightmares. Stuck in a dead end town, young James kills time with his druggie friends, engaging in debauched chemical intake to the point of unconsciousness, until he meets Sara, a sweet new arrival to their group. However, Sara wants James to take her further into the world of narcotics experimentation and to introduce her to the sinister local legend of Toad Road, a spot deep in the forest that is apparently home to the Seven Gates of Hell. Writer-director Jason Banker’s fiction feature debut is an enigmatic and unique fusion of improvisational realism and otherworldly, haunting rural terror.

Understand there are no payoffs in this movie. You will never see the 7 gates of hell or anything that happens to anyone that is remotely scary. It is completely unsatisfying. Fails on every level! PAY NO ATTENTION TO ANY GOOD REVIEW!! This movie is a waste of time and film!

Use your time wisely and don't waste it on this movie. About 90% of the movie is about teens and drugs. The 10%, go figure. Terrible movie...

Beautiful cinematography and powerful improvisational acting makes this film quite unique. Glad I didn't miss this one!

This movie reminded me of the blair witch project in its direction. Interesting film, and paints a realistic portrait of drug use among youth. Entertaining but the ending left me confused.

One of the most ridiculously tedious films I have ever seen! Not only are the underage drug use and drinking off-putting, but the fact that this film was labeled as being “Horror” is an insult to the genre. There was nothing even remotely scary about this film, and aside from the competent acting by the majority of the cast, the script seem to have been the result of an amateur with very little to add to the craft. Seriously, this movie was so bad, I contemplated turning it off several times, and towards the end I cared less about the crack-headed teens than I did at the beginning. Drug use do not make for entertaining film, and unless your idea of a good time is being social while heavily intoxicated, you will get very little value from this movie. Avoid it at all costs.

I wasn't expecting anything special from this movie, but in my opinion this is far from being a classic or a game changer. The topics of enlightenment through drugs and bad decisions have been revisited over and over by commercial and independent cinema. This time, though, such topics are treated in a shallow fashion. You'll see poorly developed characters played by terrible actors (by no means a disrespect to Sara) and the end result is just a bunch of teenagers with a short attention span, but not necessarily convincing experimenters. The aesthetics fail to aid in any of the feelings or thoughts expressed by the characters, and the dialogues are as expressive as any of the "Jay & Silent Bob" movies. Not a waste of time, but I don't see anything unique or intriguing here.

not sure where to start. saw this movie at Cinema Village in NYC a couple weeks ago and I'm still thinking about it. it's a haunting movie, will hit home if you or anyone you know has chosen a path in life that has taken them to dark places.
