Description

A 21st century Jack the Ripper set in the present day, MANIAC is a reboot of the cult film considered by many to be the most suspenseful slasher movie ever made. Frank (Elijah Wood, in a tour de force performance) is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, whose life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank’s obsession escalates and the number of victims increases, it becomes clear that Frank is far more dangerous than he seems. With a pulsating electronic score by Rob, the film is an intimate, visually daring, psychologically complex and profoundly horrific trip into the downward spiraling nightmare of a killer and his victims.

I did not see the first one but this movie definitely worked out for me. I was unaware it would have so much "POV" and I liked how it was done. Kind of less WOOD then I hoped for, regardless there was plenty more of that in a different form induced by the sooooper hot, uh, well yeah, check it out!

THIS MOVIE IT'S ONE OF THE BEST HORROR FILMS, AND BY HORROR I DO NOT MEAN SLASHER ETC. I MEAN THAT IT IS SIMPLY ARTISTIC & SCARY, I REALLY DO NOT KNOW WHY PEOPLE DON'T LIKE IT :/ IT'S A REALLY GOOD FILM. WATCH IT.

Maniac is a masterpiece. Elijah Wood does a fantastic job playing an incredibly disturbed man. The filming style is apropos, allowing you to see the world from the point of view of a psychotic individual. This movie is gorgeous. Indeed, it is not for the average movie goer. I did not flinch at the gore but I seem to be desensitized to a degree -- honestly, I expected more gore than this movie actually had because all of the other reviews emphasize the nauseating effect of the film. If you love horror movies, don't mind meaningful gore and enjoy somewhat intellectual movies, I recommend this.

This is an astounding remake that surpasses the original in every way. The acting, the amazing fx and the absolutely incredible synth score just come together perfectly. It's a mixture of horror film and art film. It is also brutal, intense and gory as heck. It's not for everyone, but those who enjoy that kind of horror film will love it to the end.

Let me start off by saying that I used to be a slasher fanatic, and seen plenty of similar films, but no film in the slasher genre has scared me this much and disappoint me this much... This film had potential. Basically based around a modern, American version of Jack the Ripper, the atmosphere is spine chilling and the suspense is well done. What ruins all of it, however, is a combination of over-the-top, near perverted violence, bad voice acting by Elijah Wood, and a disappointing ending. The horror in this film seems to not be centered on the actual murder, but is more so based around the stalking scenes, the suspense that leads up to it. In this way, this film is brilliant. I've never felt such an atmosphere like this in a slasher with this much tension. From the opening stalking scene, the metro link scene, an bath scene, the set up to the murders are chilling and contains tension absolutely abnormal for a film of this genre. Scary slasher films, to me, are hard to come by. Now onto the bad. I already went over the violence. This film had so much potential they could have made this a flat out psychological thriller/drama, but because they wanted (unfortunately) to maintain the old slasher film roots, they loaded the film to the top with blood and gore, often expressed in a crude, near perverted way . The performance by Elijah wood gave me mixed feelings. Visually, Elijah wood was a great actor, but that voice still reminded me too much of Frodo Baggins for my taste. The voice was cheesy. Now, the ending, ******spoiler alert******** I couldn't get my head around that the photographer character had to die. This is just personal preference, but I would have liked it a lot more if she lived. All in all this film is worth checking out for the 50% of the film that is brilliant, but brings it back down. This was a disappointment but also had its upsides. Check it out if you want to check out these good aspects. It's worth a watch in my opinion. I just DEFINITELY could do without a lot of other aspects.

Incredible special effects for gore fans. Otherwise though the characters are just cardboard and you don't care about any of them. The steadicam POV is just annoying. The musical score is grating.

I am not especially hard to please when it comes to a horror flicks and I have never been so unimpressed with a horror film that I felt the need to write a review. I lasted 20 minutes and then I gave up. Perhaps it gets better but I didn't have the strength to watch for another minute. Elijah wood should fire his agent for getting him into this, what a disaster!!! Don't waste your money.

Excellent remake! It is definitely an improvement over the original. It manages to evoke same uneasy feeling of the original Maniac while adding its own new ideas.
