I love this film I saw it as a little girl and been a long time favorite. There are some of the finest Actors gathered. My favorite is William Powell. He retired after making this film. RIP Boyz, we’ll be seeing soon. 💕
  • Still the greatest war movie ever.

If you’ve seen it, watch it again. And again. And again. If you haven’t seen it, take an afternoon and watch it. This is war.

Movies like this are difficult to make these days with so much emphasis on special effects rather than smart dialogue, setting and actors. Though I have never been a Jack Lemmon fan, he does put in a fine performance. It’s Fonda, Cagney and Powell that keep my attention. My only complaint is that this movie isn’t in HD format. But that complaint is not enough to make this less than 5 stars!

Funny, touching, and horribly sad tale of a Naval supply ship officer who gets whats he want’s, to be in war instead of suppling it. Fonda acting is a little stiff, but still pulls off the role of Mr. Roberts, a supply officer who sacrifices his dignity for his crew and is repaid by their support. Cagney plays the perfect nemesis, Powell the wise medical officer and Lemmon the foolish ensign who, in the end, is inspired by Mr. Roberts.

I was a preteen when I first watched this movie. It has stuck with me over the years, including my own time in the Navy. This is a true classic of dreams and aspirations, obedience, valor, and comradery. It's a drama about an officer aboard a supply ship in WWII, and a Captain with an illusionary golden crown. It is also the first film to make me laugh months and years after having watched it. Jack Lemmon was perfect for the comic relief. I still have dreams filled with foam. It isn't an award winner, and isn't meant to teach any moral. It's just a slow film about the slow life aboard a tight ship. Done perfectly by the immaculate artists; Cagney, Fonda, and Lemmon.
