Description

Holiday treat directed by Arnaud Desplechin as much a magnet for powerhouse cast Deneuve, Mathieu Amalric, Hippolyte Girardot, Melvil Poupaud, Chiara Mastroianni and Emmanuelle Devos as it was for praise by US critics. Almost indecently satisfying – Scott, NY Times Smart, outrageous and a real treat – Turan, LA Times Improbably funny and very beautiful – Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal Like getting to know a family not your own by leafing through its scrapbooks and laughing at its photograph albums, while it bickers in the next room over stuff you may never understand. –Lane, New Yorker If Ingmar Bergman and Wes Anderson some how collaborated on a movie together, I'd guess their sensibilities would yield something like A CHRISTMAS TALE –Lumenick, NY Post Out of the most ordinary ingredients - an ailing mother, estranged adult siblings, a good meal ruined by bad behavior - the endlessly inventive French filmmaker Arnaud Desplechin has made the old look fresh – Schwarzbaum, EW

This film has become as much of a Christmas tradition for me as is "It's a Wonderful Life," Charlie Brown, The Grinch (cartoon), Frosty, Rudolph, and The Family Stone. Darker and more complicated than Frank Capra, it has the same humanity, frailties, anger and respect for the human condition that Christmas should mean. But especially poignant and funny in this year, 2012.

I REALLY ENJOY THIS MOVIE BECAUSE IT GRABS FROM A PART OF CHRISTMAS OR HOLIDAY GET TOGETHERS THAT WE ALL ENCOUNTER. THE INEVITABLE DRAMA OF FAMILY! THE FILM OF COURSE DELVES A LITTLE DEEPER INTO THE ISSUES WITH THE FAMILY BUT I THINK THATS WHAT MAKES THE MOVIE. MEANING THAT WE ALWAYS TRY TO RESOLVE OUR DIFFERENCES NO MATTER HOW SCREWED UP THE SOLUTION MAY BE. FOR SOME REASON I THINK OF THIS FILM AS THE FRENCH VERSION OF THE ROYAL TENANBAUMS EVEN THOUGH BOTH FILMS HAVE A VERY DIFFERENT CINEMATIC EYE. MATHIEU AMALRIC IS SO GOOD IN THIS FILM! AS ARE ALL THE OTHER ACTORS FOR THAT MATTER. HOPE YOU ENJOY THE FILM!!!!
