Needless to say Leaving Las Vegas was fantastic in every step of the way, this movie not only fast-paced and didn't have that much story to fit with the tone of the movie and creates some sort of emotional value towards our main character who is suffering from alcholism and can't fathom with his life. Nicholas Cage gives a brilliant protrayal of a author who comitted suicide right after giving the rights to make this film and Nic cage's performence is outstanding even if Nicholas Cage can be hitter miss he still shines in this depressing protrait of sadness and emotions throughout. The movie follows Benjamin (Nicholas Cage), a failed screenwritter who is down in the dumps when it comes to losing your dream job so he decides to move to the place were they call Sin City (Aka Las Vegas) and commit suicide by drinking himself to death. Right before Benjamin is tieing the knot with alcohol he meets Sera (Elizabeth Shue) who comes from a hard place from an abusive husband and Sera is formanly a prostitue, Benjamin can pay and date Sera but promise her to not tell him to stop drinking or otherwise he will not live the romance american dream. Seeing Nicholas Cage and Elizabeth Shue connecting at some kind of magical trust was a tool that was needed in a depressing romance movie and Nic Cage and Shue have great chimestry and both of them have interesting backgrounds and establishments to keep this movie foward. And this movie succeeds at being a fast-paced movie with some flaws of course but the editing and the cinematopgraphy feel kinda dated and don't fit with anything to the movie it's because this movie didn't came close to have production value but Nic Cage and Shue are the highlights of the movie and sure give excellent performences. I love movies with the sense of heart, character development and interesting concepts that make movies movies! and Leaving Las Vegas isn't just a romance movie it tells the story of failure, life itself, romance, love, passion and finding yourself of what kind of animal you present to another person and this movie can be easily connected to other romance movies but i thrilly enjoyed the romance between Shue and Cage they were both excellent and gave a lot of care into the movie itself-rating 10/10

If you have ever read Raymond Chandler's book of the same title as this review, then you will easily see that this film could be one of the stories in that book...easily. I watched it a number of years ago, and something prompted me to look it up and watch it again. Very much the same experience...a dark and disturbing film that is superbly acted and directed. It's a love story; but certainly not of your romantic comedy sort. Excellent film, but be prepared to feel kind of icky in the end.

There isn’t much to say, except that is a great movie, with the duo at the peak of their career! Almost 20 years after its release, it’s still a powerful, hypnotic movie, about love and self-destruction.

This movie is deep, dark and sad. Don't let that fool you or let the trailer either. It is a must watch with top notch performances by both leading actors but at the end it does leave a hole in your soul, just please don't try to fill it with alcohol.

I gave this 5 stars, because there's no denying that the movie is about as powerful as any movie ever gets. Truly outstanding acting, you don't feel like you're watching actors, but more watching lives. Really dreadful, sad, miserable lives. The preview is very misleading ... labeling it a "love story," and I guess maybe in a way it is, but it's not a love story you ever want to live. I guess I need to say I saw this movie at a really rough time in my life, and maybe in some ways I was "close to the edge" ... and maybe that's why it was so gut-wrenching for me to watch. There were scenes (I won't give them away) that made me nauseated and feel horrible. At the end, I questioned why we're here, what's it all for? So... there you go. Is it an excellent movie? NO question, absolutely. Do I recommend it to everyone? No question, absolutely NOT. If reading this makes you want to watch a movie like this, then do it. You can probably handle it. If you're unsure, maybe hold off until you're in a better place.
  • Once in a Lifetime.

A movie that takes you so close to destruction that you'll finish watching it with the smell of alcohol lingering in the room. Top 10 movie of all time. Excellent job Figgis, Cage and Shue!
