Description

Hungary, at the dawn of the 17th century: Countess Erzebet Bathory (Julie Delpy) is considered the most powerful woman in the country – beautiful, intelligent and unwilling to accept a world in which men may bend and break the rules as they see fit. At a feast she makes the acquaintance of a much younger man, Istvan (Daniel Brühl), and they subsequently fall passionately in love. But her bliss is brief: Istvan’s father, Count Thurzo (William Hurt), forces his son to break with Erzebet, and embarks on an elaborate plan against her. His scheme works: Erzebet assumes she has been rejected on account of the age gap between them and, blinded by yearning and sadness, succumbs to the mad delusion that the blood of virgins will keep her forever young and beautiful. Droves of young women are subsequently brought to the castle, never again to re-emerge. Erzebet becomes visibly more and more demented and obsessed. When she finally realizes she has been the victim of political conspiracy, spearheaded by the father of her beloved, it is already too late.

One of the worst movies I've seen in years. Terrible direction, clumsy acting, and stilted dialog. Yuck!
  • Lifeless, literally and figuratively.

Julie Delpy gives a surprisingly flat performance as the infamous Countess Elizabeth Bathory. The plodding and vapid script certainly doesn't help matters much. Delpy's direction at times feels lifeless and uninspired. I don't think I learned anything new about this legend that I hadn't been frightened by in the old "In Search of Dracula" TV documentary in the 1970s. William Hurt gives his all, but again is chained to a lifeless script. Too bad. Wasted opportunity.

Terrible acting. A waste of $3.99 and time. Save yourself the torture of watching this and rent something else.

Were did Julie Delpy get the money to make this thing. Such an unattractive character. It is brilliant in it´s way. Delphy´s performace is a tour de fource. William Hurt is good and should do more Shakespeare. Brüle is adorable. In the end though the horror of the Countesses act overwhealms Delphy´s message. You can´t ge there from here.

A bit slow with just OK story. The acting good and the looks the movie is good for the time it is set in. If you know the story it is based off, you will not be happy with the ending.
  • Really good.

Made her story come to life. Also the question of her guilt.

At first I was pretty prejudice of this movie to be a success, but I watched more of it, the movie captivates and holds your attention to the end. A well done movie to my mind.
