I don't get the appeal of Bogey. He's exactly the same in every single role which I find monotonous. However, it was great to see Lauren Bacall as a young girl just starting her career, albeit a career of sameness in every role. We couldn't make it through this movie and I was surprised by the high rating.
  • Watch it for Bacall and Bogart

Expected better from a picture with this pedigree. Based on a Hemingway story (just barely is my guess) and a screenplay by Faulkner (and someone I didn’t recognize). It’s okay for what it is. It’s Bacall’s first movie. It’s her and Bogart playing off each other for the first time that really makes this worth watching. Otherwise it would be forgettable. Walter Brennan’s drunk Bogart minion is supposed to be comic relief but just seems odd. And Hoagy Carmichael? Why was he there?

A classic movie that has stood the test of time. Good plot, solid characters and a steady moving pace. The movie has terrific one-liners that people today are incapable of expressing either in real life or on the screen. One of Bogarts better movies.

I thought it was a little shallow and anti-climactic. The ending did not really seem like an ending. I was surprised that that was all there was.

Classic Bogart. Right up there with Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, Key Largo and the Big Sleep. It doesn't get any better.
