Description

She's 18. She's great-looking. And now Terry Grifith is about to set off an epidemic of comic hysteria when she enrolls in a new high school... as Just One of the Guys! Terry (Joyce Hyser) blames sexism after her journalism teacher refuses to enter her article in a competition to win a summer internship on the local newspaper. With the help of her kid brother, Buddy (Billy Jacoby), she masquerades as a male at a rival school and enters the contest there. During her charade, "Terry the Boy" tangles with a vicious bully, Greg (William Zabka), and fends off an amorous classmate, Sandy (Sherilyn Fenn). But when she falls for a handsome loner, Rick (Clayton Rohner), our hero/heroine must find a way to convince him that she's not Just One of the Guys!

    I enjoyed this movie when it first came to theaters in 1985, that I went back 4 times to see it. Then when it came out on VHS, I ponied up $125 to own the cassette and watched that so much I ended up having to buy a second tape for my collection. It is enjoyable with Joyce Hyser playing a girl who dresses as a guy in the pursuit of a cherished job at a newspaper. Clayton Rohner, William Zabka, and Sherrilyn Fenn round out a young and funny cast in this B-romp. Good if a little slow at times. Nerds rock!!!!

    Preview on here doesn't do justice to this great comedy. The brother is funny, and the bad guy is from the first Karate Kid. It's a funny high school comedy.

JUST ONE OF THE GUYS: It’s difficult to apply the adjective “innocent” to a sex farce, but I think it applies here. Never smirky or smarmy, it’s filled with spirited performances from likable actors. Hyser is engaging (and a knockout in her female incarnation), obviously digging her new life in disguise, and we share in her vivacious enthusiasm. There are also a lot of just funny lines, many from Jacoby as the unrepentant, unrestrained teenage Hormone That Walks Like A Man. And of course everyone learns A Valuable Lesson, but the lessons are both honest and bittersweet. Why should you not watch this free on TV? Because the resolution involves a graphic exposure of Terry’s anatomy (a real “coming out” party)—and even cable channels always edit that out.
