Description

Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominee Matt Dillon ("Crash," "There's Something About Mary") stars in this updated "Rebel Without a Cause" tale about teenagers in an affluent middle-American suburb where everything should be right, but isn't. The New York Times said it is "one of the year's best" and The Village Voice called it "dynamic, well directed, and acutely observed." Leonard Maltin sums it up as "powerful.... A winner!" Directed by Emmy-winner Jonathan Kaplan ("The Accused") with a soundtrack featuring music by Cheap Trick, The Cars, The Ramones and Van Halen.

I remember this on HBO as a kid. I was 14 in 1979. A great time wearing long hair and concert t-shirts. We were rebellious but we had only each other. Not iPhones and social media. Buttercups these kids of today. Dillon rocked. ESM HS 1985. Jeff B

Every now and then, the movie "Dazed & Confused" is broadcast on tv and I can count on at least one young co-worker(I'm talking late teens and early twenties here) pulling me aside and asking me(I'm in my fifties, thank god) if that's what it was like when I was in high school. I point out to them that when D&C took place(1976) I was in junior high. I then recommend "Over The Edge" to them to see a 70's nostalgia movie that focused on my era(Late 70's. early 80's). In so many ways, this is THE movie of my high school years because it was made back at that time. The fashion, the hairstyles, the slang and the attitudes of the main characters were dead on. That, primarily, is because the producers when scouting for actors for the film didn't go to the high school drama clubs and classes. Instead, they went to the detention halls, special education classes and out behind the schools at lunch hour to recruit the talent. It worked too. The actors were all high school aged actors portraying high school kids and the result is a low budget, nostalgic cult classic. The soundtrack was almost dead on with a mixture of late 70's rock and early 80's New Wave with some glaring omissions: No Led Zepplin and nothing by The Who either. Like Dazed & Confused, both bands monetary demands for the use of their music would have been the budget of both films. Which, in the end, was short sighted because both of these films will be seen as companion cult classics for years to come. Not having Zepplin or The Who in the soundtrack means that the kids of tomorrow will not hear these great tunes.

This was "my time" growing up. Remember watching on HBO / Showtime when it came out and hoping my dad never saw it though. Parts of it hit a little to close to home and didn't want him finding out what I might be uo to. These were just like the kids I hung around. This movie rates right up there with Dazed and Confused and Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

One of my favorite movies of all time!! Reminds me of my high school back in the day!! Those were great times and this movie hits it right on the head. Makes you feel you are really back in the day in school with these kids. Just such a dark horse. Makes me wanna riot on Halloween. And actually the kid on the far left IS in the movie! What are you talking about??? His one of the bad kids through most of it who shoot the police car with bb gun!
