Description

All the human spirit needs to thrive...is a chance. In one of his most legendary films, director David Lynch chronicles the intense emotional journey of a complex, lonely man and the dedicated surgeon who changed his life. John Merrick (John Hurt) was born with a horribly disfiguring congenital disease, and suffered the humiliation of being a sideshow freak. Only when London doctor Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins, Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon) rescues him does Merrick begin to regain the life of dignity and respect that everyone deserves. Based on a true story, the critically acclaimed, Oscar®-nominated film has earned its place in cinematic history. Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud and Wendy Hiller lend moving performances to an already powerful story. Visually fascinating and historically relevant, Lynch has created a haunting masterpiece of compassion, beauty and ultimately, humanity.

Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt give some of the most poweeful and deeply heartfelt performances I have ever seen. The elephant man is an incredible and deeply moving experience. Not an easy watch but if you have a soul you must see this film. Unforgettable!

I've seen this both on stage and in this film. Both outstanding pieces of work. A phenomonal cast, with an equally phenominal director. I believe filming this in B/W was a great call. It added to the ambiance of the story. However, the Elephant Man was not called John Merrick it is Joesph. John was the father. This, however, is not Lynch's fault. This is how the story was written.

When I start to feel like Life has put upon me I re-watch this and remind myself how trivial my problems in Life have been…..a story of the human spirit and what is to endure…..it should be required for all people to watch this and reflect upon who they are…..

This movie is hard to watch. The cruelty of humans can be staggering. But this is probably one of the most important films of the last 30 years. If you're highly proned to depressive moods, this film is not for you. But it is an intensely great film that needs to be seen.
  • Not for kids

I remember my Aunt taking me to see this movie when I was 8 years old. It was very disturbing and the saddest movie I have ever seen. It was also very scary. This movie should be rated at least PG-13 for all the cruelty and depressing story. It's nothing for kids to watch! 4 stars for the PG rating. Just because a movie doesn't show naked people and bad language doesn't mean it's PG. Otherwise you should watch it as an adult and maybe you will have a different outlook in people and life.

Kindness, as sad a reality as this sounds, is a characteristic that is overlooked by many, daily. However, when you see this film, you will find that you will not diregard kindnes as much as you may have before. Combined with a brilliant cast and a beautiful story, it'll teach everyone who watches it the importance of the respectfulness that should be treated to every person you meet, no matter how different they may seem.

Just want to let potential buyers who haven't seen this know that the film is in black and white. The key art image would lead you to believe this film is in color. It is an excellent film regardless.
