Description

James Cagney stars as war hero Admiral William F. "Bull" Halsey in this classic directed by Robert Montgomery. On the verge of retirement, Halsey recalls his most fateful wartime experience: his five-week showdown between himself and Japanese Admiral Yamamoto in 1942. In command of the American naval forces in the Pacific, Halsey scores a crucial, tide-turning victory at Guadalcanal. In concentrating on the participants rather than the battle itself, The Gallant Hours is a character study of a remarkable American.

Excellent except for the historical diversion of the death of the Japanese military leader Yatamoto
  • An outstanding movie

No blazing guns. No sound effects. No Discovery Channel platitudes. Just an overwhelming, wrenching account of the decisions Halsey made that shaped an entire theater of war, and the effect the consequences of those decisions has on him as a man as well as a commander

A good movie showing how Admiral William F. "Bull" Halsey's decisions were made using his own idealism and staffs opinions.

If you are a historian or just a world war two enthusiast, you will enjoy this movie. Cagney captures the tough, hard-nosed Halsey. It is amazing to see what those men went through at the start of the war in the pacific theater!!
