Description

In Fargo, filmmaking brothers Joel and Ethan Coen both embrace and satirize their North Dakota roots. A patrolman and two innocent bystanders are discovered murdered in cold blood on a snowy North Dakota highway, leading very pregnant policewoman Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) on an investigation that uncovers a conspiracy of greed and ineptitude. Minneapolis husband, farther and car salesman Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy), who has long chafed under the thumb of his wealthy boss and father-in-law, concocts an elaborate scheme involving the kidnapping of his wife and a million-dollar ransom to pay off his extensive gambling debts. However, everything that could possibly go wrong indeed DOES go wrong. Officer Gunderson's outwardly homespun and folksy persona conceals a penetrating mind and a fierce moral compass, and she easily sees through the poorly executed and badly hidden events perpetrated by the bumbling, yet highly dangerous kidnappers (Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare). Her hilarious and arresting performance netted her an Oscar, and the Coens were also rewarded with a Best Original Screenplay award.

This is definitely a Coen brothers patented quirky film and it certainly gives rural Minnesotans a rough time. One of the elements is that of trying to figure out which of the characters is the least stupid. With this in mind, the casting is perfect, as all the actors are very good at playing their individually quirky roles. Fargo is one of the few films I've seen that could truly be called unique. It is not a film you would watch more than once every few years, but it is a good one. Frankly, this is a world of weirdness where I would not want to live, but for the inhabitants (other than bad guys) seem blissfully comfortable there.

This is one of the best films ever made. The fact that this is a true story makes it more remarkable. I love the Cohen Brothers.

Fargo is a very hard movie to describe. Is it is a comedy? Is it a thriller? It mixes dark comedy, brilliant acting, thrills and atmosphere and a great screenplay that manages to make dialogue that would not have been funny otherwise very funny into a seamless whole. The acting from William H. Macy and Frances McDormand is great and the soundtrack compliments the movie perfectly. There are so many scenes bursting with originality and creativity. Just watch this movie! You won’t regret it.

Full of quirky Coen characters and dark comedy, "FARGO'' is a well written crime thriller about two psychos on a killing spree, and a man who isn't content with his simple life.

Another Coen brothers' gem! Superb acting by William H. Macy, Frances McDormand, and Steve Buscemi. The story is preposterous, yet a true one. Leave it to the brothers to successfully bring it to life.
