Description

In this holiday comedy, Academy Award and Golden Globe-winner Reese Witherspoon ("Walk the Line," "Legally Blonde") stars with Vince Vaughn ("Wedding Crashers," "The Break-Up") as an upscale, happily unmarried San Francisco couple, Kate and Brad, who find themselves socked in by fog on Christmas morning and as a result, their exotic vacation plans morphed into the family-centric holiday they had, until now, gleefully avoided. Out of obligation an unable to escape they trudge to not one, not two, but four relative-choked festivities, increasingly mortified to find childhood fears raised, adolescent wounds reopened…and their very future together uncertain. As Brad counts the hours to when he can get away from their parents, step-parents, siblings and an assortment of nieces and nephews, Kate is starting to hear the ticking of a different kind of clock. And by the end of the day, she is beginning to wonder if their crazy families choices are not so crazy after all.

I saw the star-studded cast of characters that I (normally) love so I made the mistake of purchasing instead of renting. The actors were great but the story is just plain stupid, and never garnered even a single laugh from my family.
  • Underrated

I love this movie and couldn’t find it on any streaming service. I was excited to find it here and more than happy to pay for it. Great story, great humor and great actors. It’s definitely not given the props it deserves!

I’m actually sitting here, right after watching it, trying to put my finger on why I didn’t love it. I liked it and I could even see myself watching it again but it’s by no means a Christmas classic (in my opinion). I think they tried to tackle way too many things...I mean it was literally called, 4 Christmases (har har). They didn’t really make much progress with their families and they completely changed some of their own ideologies seemingly out of the blue. Like Reese’s character goes from being set on not having kids to wanting kids in what felt like 2 shakes and it’s not like the kids in her family she spent time with did anything to cultivate that opinion. It seemed like a movie that would start with them being “self-centered” and not caring about being with their families but then in the end realizing Christmas is about spending time with family (whether that be blood, friends, or whoever you consider family) and it’s worth it to get outside of themselves and think about others. That never really happened, though. But I didn’t mind the dysfunctional family stuff because, I mean, look at National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. That movie is packed with family dysfunction and it’s hilarious. I also think a lot of families do argue at least a little bit over the holidays and no family is perfect. In terms of comedic value, I smiled at “funny” scenes but didn’t actually laugh. It’s that very in your face comedy. However, I didn’t find it too rude or crude and I can’t even think of a time they cursed. Someone reviewed it and said the cursing was too much but it’s rated PG-13 and I don’t remember cursing so they must have different definitions of “curse words.” Overall, I’d say this was a good idea in theory but not in practice. Too much was crammed in, it didn’t feel very Christmas-y, there wasn’t very much in terms of family bonding or just warm family moments, and the comedy was pretty flat. But for whatever reason, I still kinda liked it. It’s the kind of movie that if it’s already on or if I’ve already watched the other Christmas movies I want to watch I’d watch it again. Wasn’t great for me but wasn’t terrible either. I’d still tell people to give it a shot, though, and decide for themselves.

I absolutely love this movie! I empathize with the emotions the characters experience during each of their 4 Christmas’s and it makes me laugh so hard my stomach hurts and my cheeks are sore! Absolutely hilarious! Maybe the people who don’t like this movie have perfect families and had perfect childhoods? I identified with the dysfunction of these families and cringed when the characters did and squirmed when other things brought back memories. It’s light hearted enough that you feel the feelings, and laugh out loud as a light shines on those dysfunctions! Such a great holiday movie for those who can relate to crazy families!
