Description

The Enemy Below is an even-handed study of submarine warfare (during WWII) from the vantage point of both sides. The captain of an American destroyer, despite having lost his family in the war, endeavors to let his head rule his heart in combat. He encounters a German U-boat commander as honorable and compassionate as himself. The two men develop a grudging respect for each another as they pursue one another throughout the North Atlantic.

People may be interested to know this story has some basis in fact. Read the account of the last battle of the old destroyer USS Borie in the Atlantic. It fought back and forth and rammed a German U boat. While resting on the foredeck of the U boat sailors were throwing kinves and empty shell casings at each other. Both ships were finally lost. No survivors from U boat and 27 men lost from destroyer. The movie is one of the best though.

Along with “Run Silent, Run Deep” and “Destination Tokyo,” this is one of the best movies made about submarine warfare during WWII, and probably the best one about action in the Atlantic (the others being set in the Pacific). Watching the tactical actions of the American destroyer and the German submarine commander is riveting! Excellent Movie!

The movie is set in the South Atlantic, not the North. This make the movie more interesting as the war action was not as prevalent as in the north. A bored destroyer crew, a U-boat on an important mission, and two captains with similar feelings about the war make this a first rate movie. Robert Mitchum and Curt Juergens are the stars playing the captains. The cinematography is excellent for an old movie. (1957) Do not hesitate to see this movie.

This is an amazing movie. It's not corny or cheesy or low quality or any of that that the preveiw supposes. It's well done, shot, acted and all that. I would recomend it to anyone.
