Compared to "Outsourced" and "Bend It Like Beckham", this here is an all-too lazy effort to portray the notion/fact that love knows no boundaries. The writer and the director nailed the part of the two leads being an ocean apart. But the overall story is just like any typical Hollywood romantic comedy. Boy meets girl (or vice versa); they like each other instantly; a "liar/coward-revealed" moment tears them apart; and they think again and come back together. Simple as that. Truth be told, that plot structure is stale and repetitve. Not to mention flat and phony. So much more goes on during a first encounter with a new neighbor. One annoying element: Granger Woodruff (Jesse Metcalfe) catches Priya (Shriya Saran) in a lie; yet circumstances turn the tables so that Priya has a reason to dismiss Granger when it is he who has a reason to dismiss her. (Enter the cliche known as "the other woman".) Like the woman's letdown overrules the man's letdown. Another thing: the whole 100% of Priya's family's story is not told. They're just there to disapprove or approve the relationships. There's more to Indian parents and relatives than that. Third: Why does Priya have to lie to get close to Granger? She could just tell the truth and no one would think less of her. Who knows? Granger would still want to know her and her culture anyway. Plus, the other woman in and out of Granger's life is not truly needed; or rather completely irrelevant. Furthermore, it is NOT imperative that they become an item. Granger and Priya could still meet, part ways, and [hope to] meet again in the future. You know, get to know each other, inside and out, before life takes them their seperate ways--leaving a possibility that they'll find each other again? Shriya Saran, Anupam Kher, and--I'm neutral about this one--Jesse Metcalfe are capable of more than this. There is more to cross-continental friendship and romance than just where they live or how they talk. It doesn't operate like a Nicholas Sparks novel or a Garry Marshall film--speedy and overly sentimental. I'm all for intercultural, international, and interracial chemistry, intimate and non-intimate. Not to mention for a film to portrays such. But this flick just doesn't do it the way it should be--delving, honest, and educational. At the end of the day, "The Other End of the Line" is a film in need of a complete do-over.

It's a shame this film did not get much notice. It rings emotionally true. Definitely worth buying! I've watched several times and highly recommend it. It's a great example of the romantic comedy genre. The lead characters are likeable and wonderfully portrayed by the charismatic lead actors. The cast of supporting players painted a wonderful setting. I was totally drawn in. There are quite a few touching moments and funny scenes. The female lead's family was a wonderfully portrayed as quirky yet loving. I wish I could have seen more!
