Description

Academy Award winners Sir Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson star in the film adaptation of Jane Austin's classic novel Pride and Prejudice. The socially conscious Mrs. Bennet (Mary Boland), with the begrudging help of her husband (Edmund Gwenn), sets out to find suitable--and suitably rich--husbands for her five daughters. The already difficult project becomes even more complicated when Mrs. Bennet's strongest-willed daughter, Elizabeth (Garson), decides to pursue rich and handsome, but cynical and boorish, Mr. Darcy (Olivier). But Elizabeth will only win Mr. Darcy on her own terms--and only after exacting genteel revenge for his initial indifference toward her in this story of romance, wit and manners.

...it’s funny, it’s romantic, and it stays fairly true to the classic story. Great cast of actors, I highly recommend it!

Outside of L.O. as brilliant casting, this movie is an abomination and a slap in the face to Jane Austen. 100% Rotten Tomato score? I mean, did you guys even read the book?
  • Horrible version.

This is by far the worst version of P&P that I've seen to date. From start to finish it was more like a farce than a film version of a classic piece of literature. Worst of all, Greer Garson was so was incredibly miscast in this film. She was 36 years old at that time, and looked every bit of it. Really, it was silly seeing a woman that age wearing big bows in her hair and trying to act like a much younger woman. It didn't work. A lot of the costuming was over the top, as well. Altogether a very unsatisfying movie.
  • Not exactly true to Austen, but has all the heart!

    By Mine, hands off!
as many have and will point out, it is not exactly true to the book, or the style of dress. WHO CARES!! Jane Austen would have probably love this version very much because it captures the heart, and doesn't let go. Greer Garson and Sir Laurence Oliver are wonderful as Elizabeth and Darcy. All of the sisters were a delight, as well as all of the other cast. It was wonderful, and will always be my favorite version.

I love this verison because of the beautiful dresses. Wonderful! I love the plot. It does sway from the jane austen book, but its still a pretty good verison. Laurence Olivier is so HOT! He is best Darcey yet.
  • Best version of them all!

This film is head and shoulders above the Keira Knightly version of a few years ago even though technically that version is more faithful to the letter of Jane Austen this is more faithful to the spirit of it. Plus Greer Garson has more acting ability in her little finger than Ms. Knightly has in her whole body. This script which was worked on by Aldous Huxley sparkles with wit and charm. Laurence Olivier is the best Darcy of any of the film versions though Colin Firth runs a close second. Great movie and worth buying.

I have seen all versions, and yes iTunes has them all. The Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle version is under TV and not film, since it is technically not a film but a series. I do like the 2005 version best because it has a broader focus than the others. But Olivier is excellent in this movie, as well as Greer Garson but you do have to like movies from this time period to like them.

This is my favorite film adaptation for several reasons. Lizzie has the sharpest wit in this one, Darcy is played with moments of warmth and charm that often seem missing from other performances. You can actually like him. Usually the performances are sooooooo withdrawn and sullen the romantic tension Austin created on the page never blossoms on the screen. And then there are Mr and Mrs Bennett, Mrs in particular is often played as unrelentingly shrill, I almost didnt make it through the much ballyhooed Colin Firth version for the painful sound of Mrs Bennett. She is still a bit silly and shrill here, but just a bit. And who could be more perfect as Mr Bennet than Edmund Gwynn?
