Description

She's an ex-gun moll and showgirl suddenly forced to protect a kid whose parents have been rubbed out by the mob. Now the mob wants the kid dead too - but first they'll have to deal with Gloria (GenaRowlands in an Oscar-nominated performance, Best Actress, 1980.) Director John Cassavetes, known for his unique approach to filmmaking, creates a powerful, tension-filled story. An accountant (Buck Henry) is in possession of a ledger which could put a number of mob bosses behind bars for a long time. Before he is killed, however, he manages to entrust the ledger and his son to a neighbor, Gloria, for protection. Gloria reluctantly takes the kid on the run while keeping the mob at bay, sometimes at the point of a gun. Finally, tired of running, she decides to confront them head on!

Although Sharon Stone is an excellent actress in her own right I have no idea what they were thinking when they remade such a great classic as this is, featuring one of the top actresses of all time

ITunes has not disappointed me. I took a chance and typed in the name of what I consider a classic that I have shared with my wife and daughters on VHS and thought I would never have another chance to view this movie outside the confines of my home. I half heartedly expected to find the Sharon Stone remake and was overjoyed to be presented with the opportunity to purchase this film and load it on my device. Now when I am sitting in an airport or in a hotel room I will be able to wile the time away watching such classics as this and other offerings that take me back to the good ole days. My VHS copy was playing as if warped by time and humidity or perhaps my player was suffering from old age, whatever the case, some of the subtle nuances were being overshadowed by warbling sounds or grainy pictures. I could not enjoy the tough steely character that Gena Rowland put out there nor the innocence and anger of the young Juan Adames. Thank you again ITunes for bringing back some of my fondest memories. I look forward to finding and buying more classics as they become available.

Cassavetes did not get the chance to direct a lot before he died but this is a wonderful genre movie that set the stall for the tough women movies to follow. Rowlands is a perfect and believable character evolving rapidly on the run.
