Description

Kevin Costner plays the most famous lawman ever to stride the Wild West. In a gritty, complex portrayal hailed as a "classic American performance" (Bob Campbell, Newhouse Newspapers), Academy Award winner Costner (Dances with Wolves, The Bodyguard) plays the man who became a myth in acclaimed director Lawrence Kasdan's (The Big Chill, Silverado) epic, action-filled saga. Gene Hackman, an Oscar winner for Unforgiven, as Wyatt's iron-willed father, and Dennis Quaid (The Big Easy, The Right Stuff) as Earp's deadly best friend Doc Holliday add power to this mammoth, hard-hitting Western. From Wichita to Dodge City to the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona, Wyatt Earp is a thrilling journey of romance, adventure and desperate, heroic action.

To protect and serve and yet take the law in his own hands. To also face charges himself. Like a lot of people, messy and not perfect. It could be a very dangerous time and place. Read some books about the people and time and see for yourself (One of many good ones, Dodge City by Tom Clavin touches on numerous people and what happened to them).

I’ve seen this movie several times and it is amazing how much detail that they have put into showing Wyatt Earp’s life over the years and that it’s not only a movie about showdowns but about the life he had lived most western movies are watched because everyone loves to see a showdown or a duel but this an amazing movie with balances between showdowns and event that had changed Wyatt’s life.

It’s too bad people treat this as a documentary instead of a Hollywood Movie. It’s a great Western Drama with amazing actors. This movie got a bad rap because of timing. Tombstone stole the show with Val Kilmer and Kurt Russell, but this is just as good. It’s the drama version of Tombstone while still having some great action adventure. It builds Wyatt’s Character in a much more fulfilling story. If you’re not a huge movie buff, but a blockbuster movie fan then watch Tombstone. If your looking for a more in-depth movie that’s slow, then builds watch this movie. Both movies are amazing and should be appreciated. I still believe Val K. Deserved the Oscar for Tombstone.

I think the wrtiers of this movie wanted to use Stuart lake book of Wyatt Earp, this is not even close to historical as someone else mentioned. Living a few miles from Tonbstone, I have over 40 books, movies, magazines, so-called autobiographies of Wyatt Earp.. The only thing this movie offers is the good cinema shots. If you NEED a western then watch this hybrid of The Hobbitt and Stuart Lake book of Wyatt Earp. I'm laughing still at the "Historical accurate comment" someone made. Listen, if you want REAL history Read The last Gunfight, very OBJECTIVE life of Wyatt, Tombstone, politics of Southern Arizona and your view of this movie will change..

I love to watch movies, and westerns hold a special place in my heart. I've seen countless reviews and ratings of this film, and they have nothing but bad things to say. Why is that you might ask? Well, I'm here to clarify what everyone missed while watching this film, starting with the acting. Costner is at his very best in this film, showing the true attitude of Wyatt Earp, which was indeed a cold and emotionless man. The rest of the actors all do great performances in this film, especially Dennis Quaid. This film looks good, and has a very good and riveting story. Don't even pay attention to the fact it's three hours long, that's beside the point. The point is, all those so called critics are wrong when it comes to this film. It shows the most historically accurate version of this story, along with Costner's Wyatt Earp being the most accurate performance, ever. Give it a rent or buy it, and watch it for yourself. Definitely one of my favorite westerns ever.

No one captures Wyatt's persona better than Kevin. The good, the bad and the ugly. Wonderful portrayal of our history.

There is absolutely no way to separate the truth from the legend of Wyatt Earp. And that's okay. This film is, above all, entertaining which in and of itself makes it a good movie, worth watching. What sets it higher than just "good" is it's unflinching and honest attempt to portray Wyatt and all those around him, such as John Holliday, as real people living in a place and time before wide-ranging Federal Laws; before National Guards; before telephones. These people live, post Civil War, in the wild. Wyatt Earp is best remembered, of course, because of the O.K. Corral; but he, like all of us, was just a human being. He simply did what he believed, really believed, was right; opinions and judges be damned. Here's a film that, over three hours, doesn't feel long enough. And Dennis Quad has NEVER been better - his lack of even an Academy Award Nomination was a sin. In alll honesty, I get goosebumps when he and Wyatt first meet in Texas; and I always laugh when he tells common resident to "Kiss my Rebel D***". The "Wild West" was, after all, tamed primarily by disenchanted Southeners who, after losing the Civil War, wanted to get as far away from Wasthinton D.C. as possible. Were Earp's actions lawful? Justified? Moral? I don't know. It's a compliment that Kasdan lets the viewer decide. But like great war films, you realize that all Earp wanted was to protect his family and his fellow lawmen. It wasn't about some grandiose sense of deestiny, or virtue, or even Manifest Destiny. It was about survival. Yes, I admit, "Tombstone" is in many ways more entertaining, but "Wyatt Earp" is far, far more meaningful, compelling, and memorable. And it will last the test of time.
