Description

Based on Steve Martin's best-selling novella, and starring Golden Globe winner Claire Danes (Best Actress In A TV Series, My So-Called Life, 1994), Golden Globe nominee Steve Martin (Best Actor In a Motion Picture -- Comedy/Musical, Father of the Bride Part II, 1995), and Jason Schwartzman (Bewitched), Shopgirl is a disarmingly funny love story. Mirabelle, brilliantly played by Danes, is an aspiring artist working behind the glove counter at a Beverly Hills department store when she meets two very different men -- Jeremy (Schwartzman), a socially inept guy who doesn't seem to be going anywhere, and Ray (Martin) a wealthy entrepreneur who has the world at his feet. Filled with the mixed signals and missteps of a modern romance, Shopgirl is a fresh and witty, warm, and funny romantic comedy you can't help but fall in love with.

I would have given this zero stars if I could. So disappointed. I figured that with Steve Martin, Claire Danes, and Jason Schwartzman that this movie would be funny and charming. Boy was I wrong. No love between any of the characters. Hardly even any drama either. We are supposed to believe that Martin and Danes love each other in some way but all they do is have sex to creepy music that makes you feel like someone is about to be killed or raped. Martin basically stalks Danes then buys sex from her. You don't like nor do you hate any of the characters because there is no substance to any of them. The only tolerable part is Jason Schwartzman's reappearance at the end that adds only the slightest bit of charm to this movie.

I would have rated this 1 star had it not been for Claire Danes. She single handedly carried the movie. What a disappointment Steve Martin. The storyline was awful and the narration was almost too bad to be able to finish the movie. Do not be fooled by the great cast, it's not worth $2.99.

This film is very poignant and touching on so many levels.Regardless of your gender or age, if you've ever been alone or hurt in a relationship you will see part of yourself in this movie. At times light and amusing the plot suddenly turns searing and almost painful at others. As a single male I typically avoid movies of this genre but shopgirl is very different and will leave an undeniable mark on you. The cinematography is incredible with almost every scene being very panoramic. The cast is perfect and the voice overs of Steve Martin add a fantastic touch.Do not miss this wonderful cimematic masterpiece.

I saw this movie a while back and I adored it. Clair Danes is such a wonderful girl who loves so deeply in this film that it will bring tears to your eyes, there are also lots of funny parts and there are so many emotions in this perfect film. As my sweetie once said sometimes a movie just speaks to you and this movie did like no other movie had before.Last night a neighbor and her husband and I all watched and we all three enjoyed it very much. Top notch performances by all 3 lead actors.

i don't take the time to write reviews, i just never have (though i rely heavily on them--making amends though). i wasn't expecting the movie to become a favorite, just something to pass the time but i should have known, steve martin's got a great mind and a clear vision. anyway, to the movie-it's made in the style of independent movies, with real ppl qualities to the characters (not just animated quirks). they're relatable, have dimension--i think woody allen was inspired by this so if you liked vicky christina barcelona you'll enjoy this movie. it's not complicated (as far as that other review goes, i loved stick it, bring it on, honey and center stage--and i loved this movie too, in a very different way) it's not depressing, it's just a chapter in a few ppl's lives but it won't leave you feeling like you've been left hanging- very satsifying.

this film will catch you off guard. it is artfully shot, the music is perfectly selected, the characters are enchanting. it has a subtle beauty to it... and if you take the time to really watch it you will see it. at times it is uplifting, relatable, saddening, hopeful. there is an uncommon honesty to it... you can feel each character. i have seen it three times now and i like it more with each viewing. i highly recommend this little gem.
