Description

Bailey and Drew are a 40 something couple much like other couples: They have two kids, two jobs, one dad with Alzheimer’s and one boob with cancer. With only two weeks until daughter Scout’s eighth birthday party, Bailey just wants to check things off of her massive 'to do' list. This isn't her first rodeo with Breast Cancer and she's determined to handle it as efficiently as possible. Drew wants to completely fix Bailey. He decides the best way to do this is to 'work' her well, taking any handyman job that comes his way. But Bailey doesn't want to be 'fixed'- she wants to be WELL. Their family fights for normalcy, attempting to keep their sense of humor intact, as Bailey juggles her misplaced anger, wayward Boot Camp clients and her father's mental decline while Drew enlists the help of his 'road dogs' Lance and Alan to make Scout’s party proof they “got this”. When Bailey's ten-year-old son, Max opens up that he knows the truth, Bailey finally realizes she can’t control everything.

Me and my wife watched it last night and we both agreed “Quality Problems” is a wonderful movie that deals with some heavy subject matter in a realistic dramedy manner. It didn’t get bogged down in melancholy but instead showed restraint by adding in charming humor, moments of true family love & support, and gave us a glimpse how real people handle difficult problems while still trying to maintain their lives. By using the daughter’s birthday party as a goal/throughline, we see Bailey and Drew struggling to deal with Bailey’s breast cancer scare while trying to grasp on to every bit of normalcy as we watch Drew desparately try to pull their daughter’s birthday party off (they keep repeating the supportive phrase “I’ve got this” regarding the party but also seems to be their mantra for trying to juggle Bailey’s medical scare plus her father’s debilitating Alzheimer’s). All of the performances are wonderfully warm, charming, funny, and heartbreaking, especially those of the circle of friends there trying to help Drew & Bailey’s balancing act.

Quality Problems is a beautiful story. You will laugh, cry, then laugh again. Yes you learn you have cancer but you still need to live your complex life! Watch and you won’t be disappointed. Heartfelt to the core with many real life moments as it is based off a true family and their story. The characters are real, the love is genuine and the story poignant. Yet there is laughter. So much laughter. Enjoyed watching this movie thoroughly.

Caught this film at it's Los Angeles festival premerie and fell in love with the fictional and charismatic family played by the real and charismatic Purdy family. They bumbled their way through crises that could break others with love, humor and compassion. Never maudlin, the delightful comedy about a woman coping with a cancer diagnosis delivered properly earned tear-jerker moments. All around, a real triumph and must-see film.
