Description

'Poustinia' is a documentary short about Gendron Jensen, a man passionately devoted to his artistic calling. He draws detailed, precise images of bones. Though bones traditionally represent sterility and death, Jensen sees them as 'emissaries - portals unto exaltation - bespeaking all of creation'.

This beautiful film presents Gendron Jensen in all his wondrous creativity. His story is moving--sad and happy, caring always. His drawings communicate to us in new ways. Gendron elicits, from the tiny bones he collects, the vibrant life of creatures. In so doing, he makes me feel life stirring within myself. I begin to sense the emotions that stir us all, the thoughts that inspire us. The bones become metaphors for humanity. Not death, but life! In his extraordinary drawings, Gendron imbues these bones with all that we are. His voice remains with me long after viewing this remarkable film about a true artist.

Poustinia proves that beauty is most certainly not "skin deep" as Gendron Jensen reveals the incredible inner scaffolding of living creatures through his art. Kristian Berg is a premier documentary film maker with a deep appreciation for his subject matter. Earthy, yet divine, Poustinia is not to be missed.

This film dramatizes the dynamic interaction between brilliant pencil-and-paper craftsman and sentimental mysticist who are artist Gendron Jensen. Writer-Director Kristian Berg maintains the balance beautifully and the viewer will be glad for it.

I saw this perfect film at the Woodstock Film Festival, where it ultimately won Best Documentary Short (no surprise there). So psyched it's now available online!

Every day we have more media from which to choose & yet it seems to always be a whole lot more of the same. Director Berg has found a truly unique story and tells it with a strong point of view. How wonderful to be pulled into a story that actually surprises you. I look forward to Berg's future films. He's certainly "made his bones" with this one!
