Description

A gripping tale of love and honor forged between fierce enemies of war, inspired by true events and starring Matthew Fox and Academy Award®-winner Tommy Lee Jones as General Douglas MacArthur. Immediately after Emperor Hirohito's World War II surrender, General MacArthur (Jones) suddenly finds himself the de facto ruler of a foreign nation. He challenges his expert on Japanese culture - General Fellers (Fox) - to provide evidence in 10 short days to decide if the Japanese Emperor, worshipped as a god by his people but accused of war crimes, should be punished or saved. The fate of a nation awaits…

I don't get why some people think that Rotten Tomatoes is "wrong". On the contrary they are very accurate as there is nothing great about this movie. Very average.
  • A film derailed by needless romance subplot

The trailer and poster for the film make this seem like a historical action/drama…in truth it’s nothing of the sort. The entire historical focus ones assumes is the main point of the film takes a backseat to a boring romance story. A romance where the two main leads have no chemistry at that. MacArthur is relegated to a background role and what should have been a drama about power in post war Japan is nothing more than a tepid tale of lost romance. A boring film that wastes a great premise, actors, and era.

The unnecessary addition of a non-existent love story is weak. The rewriting of Bonner's role in researching the emperor's role is worse - he was told by MacArthur, who had already decided to exonerate the emperor, to concoct evidence in support. Bonnet is also falsely shown to have diverted air attacks in order to save his girlfriend. Why does Hollywood have to make up this BS - Bonner's real life was far more interesting and complex than this, not particularly entertaining, fantasy...

I almost didn’t purchase this movie. I read the Top Critics’ Reviews and wondered. I purchased it anyway. I just had a feeling. How wrong could these critics be. It was fascinating by the movie. I have studied WWII and the War in the Pacific. My father fought there and almost died there. It covers history that is not generally covered well. I thought all of the actors did a very good job. I then reminded myself of when I was in college and was told that critics can give you history and background but a person’s opinion is worth as much as a person being hired as a critic. Thank Heavens for Gut Feelings. Watch this movie and learn of events and culture. And to the Top Critics, your opinions are not worth any more than mine and you really missed it on this one.

This film could have been a time piece about post-surrender Japan which would have been an amazing movie. Instead, a mediocre love-story overpowers the historical value.

  • Recommend reading journals on this historical matter.

The emperor finishing the war and rebuilding Japan against the military authorities? How dare this movie distort the history? Hirohito was just one of the war criminals. He made a deal with the U.S. on the condition of keeping his throne!

It is not an understatement to say, this movie reflects an incredibly important decision point in the history of not only America and Japan, but of the entire world. Had the wrong decision been made, the ramifications would have been incomprehensible. Well acted, well choreographed, and well worth watching. As for the critics of the 'romance' piece in the movie, I say to them, it's a shame not to realize the tens of thousands of Asian American couples who have been brought together through war and peace. Watch it, you won't be disappointed.
