Description

High-schooler Richard Samuels lucks into a role in a daring Broadway production of Julius Caesar. Cues, staging, rehearsals, romance, rivalries: he has a lot to learn. And the first thing to learn is never upstage Mercury Theatre's genius director, 22-year-old Orson Welles. Zac Efron wins hearts and applause as Richard, the Me of this celebratory curtain call for when dreams - and the theater - were big. Christian McKay offers an uncanny Welles, the imposing, impetuous center of Richard's exciting new universe. Claire Danes is the enterprising stage assistant drawn into both men's lives. And Richard Linklater (Before Sunset, The School of Rock) directs with the vibrant spirit of those for whom all the world is a stage. Bravo!

I normally don't write reviews, but this movie was fantastic and Zac Efron nailed his performance! I love this time period as well, people cared about what they wore and always looked their best.
  • No Chemistry....

The lack of chemistry between Effron and Danes killed it for me on this one.

I loved Zac Efron showing his acting versatility and portraying the vulnerability of youth. Also wonderfully truthful show of the real Orson Welles. For someone who has a love/hate relationship with the mad genius who gave the world Citizen Kane, this movie was very enjoyable.

. . . Christian McKay as Orson Welles. Uncanny in his portrayal, McKay offers nuances that bring Welles to life in three dimensions. Bravo, Mr. McKay.

I honestly didn't expect much from this film, and yet it delivered a warm, tender little story. What a surprise! Efron, able to hold his own against pros without Disney backgrounds, generated a genuinely winning performance. This film functions as an homage to theatre, the !930's, and coming-of-age; each facet is lovely. I am disappointed that the film never had its U.S. theatre-release. A true disappointment, given its capacity to endear its actors to its audience.
