Description

Taking fatherly advice is not in Joe Coughlin’s nature. Instead, the WWI vet is a self-proclaimed anti-establishment outlaw, despite being the son of the Boston Police Deputy Superintendent. Joe’s not all bad, though; in fact, he’s not really bad enough for the life he’s chosen. Unlike the gangsters he refuses to work for, he has a sense of justice and an open heart, and both work against him, leaving him vulnerable time and again—in business and in love. Driven by a need to right the wrongs committed against him and those close to him, Joe heads down a risky path that goes against his upbringing and his own moral code. Leaving the cold Boston winter behind, he and his reckless crew turn up the heat in Tampa. And while revenge may taste sweeter than the molasses that infuses every drop of illegal rum he runs, Joe will learn that it comes at a price.

  • Hugely underrated

Tight action sequences, great attention to details of the era, wonderful cinematography and charismatic performances. The film moves at a brisk pace and doesn’t overstay its welcome. Not challenging enough to really be a “prestige” film, but definitely an entertaining gangster tale free of pretensions and rich with clever twists. Far better than it’s reputation.

Starts out as a “Gangster” movie then turns into a Social Justice Abomination.

There are things to admire about this film, but it just doesn't come together in a convincing way. The chemistry between Ben Affleck and Zoe Saldana is a miss. And, making her into Mother Theresa by taking all the drug money and using it to help the poor and needy made me literally laugh out loud. The sets, costumes, and so much else is top rate in this picture. And, the portrayal of human dynamics unfolding as an out-of-town ganster disrupts the power structure in another state is well done. But, in the end, the intriguing premise and well-crafted film logistics are overwhelmed by unbelievable characters and poor chemistry.

Affleck is certainly capable of making great movies, but he falls short with this one. Bad. Very bad. Boring. Very boring. It feels like they spent so much time trying to make this look like an authentic gangster film, that they had no time/energy/money to devote to the character dialogue or plot. I'm never given a reason to care about this movie or the characters in it. Uninspired acting, slow, tacky flow, misguided in every way imaginable. I wanted to love this movie, I really did, but it falls short. Badly.

Affleck wrote a action-packed script, directed it exceedingly well, though casting himself limited the film. (He's not a great actor, now is he?) But the film entertains and carries the amoral, violent period with style and engagement. Great production value, gorgeously designed cinematic storytelling. I was impressed by Affleck the creative force. The one weakness is Affleck the actor. All the other pieces and characters work perfectly. (at least he didn't use his brother).
