Description

Life for 15 year old Ruthie (Stefania Owen) and her young mother, Rita (Katie Holmes), has never been stable. Fleeing Rita’s latest boyfriend, they find themselves living out of their beat-up car and heading east in search of a better life. When money runs out and their car breaks down, they are stranded in a small town where Rita ultimately lands a steady job waitressing at Tiny’s, a local diner where they begin to develop a family: tender-hearted Marty (Richard Kind), the owner of the diner, and Pam (Eve Lindley), a transgender waitress with big dreams who becomes Ruthie’s closest friend.

Katie Holmes has created a masterful film filled with tendrer complex relationsips between fully realized characters. There were so many moments in this film that moved me, it's hard to recount them all. The mother daugher realationship has never been expored so deeply and skillfully in a film. This is an extraordinary work of art. Katie's acting is Oscar worthy. And I would not be all surprised if both Eve Lindley and Stephania Owen get Oscar nods for their supporting roles. A true gem of a film. One that I think will speak to many people and resonate for years to come.
