Angelina Jolie’s delivers a powerful performance. Set in France in the 70s, - the movie is filled with amazing scenery, architecture and well done camera angles. she and her Husband Roland want to “get away from it all”. By the Sea is a classic movie, a simple yet dynamic story. Strikingly different than most if not all her roles. Setting aside your opinion you have about Angelina, watch with an open mind and instill your impression of exceptional screenplay.

I have come to this movie late, and I must tell you it is a happy discovery! To be sure, it it might be underrated as Jolie's attempt to make a European Art Film, and maybe it was! No matter the case, it is fine cinema, even if cinema is dead. What I appreciated about the film is the troop's full participation in the endeavor, as well as the attempt to capture the primary couple's silent agreement to continue on, no matter the "barren" prospects. Somehow, I have the feeling we have not seen the last of the Jolie/Pitt partnership. I hope I'm right. This is a good movie, and a partnership worth fighting for! David Ripley
  • Hidden gem, ethereal. Critics are becoming jaded, cannot find the gem in this

I found this beautifully filmed and acted. It very subtly draws you in...where you find a marriage revived as a symbol of love and life revived. In these days of violent action movies, one can become jaded and with that lose clarity on the ~ethereal~. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Pitt for producing this lovely film for all of us.

Very slow paced, watched it when I needed a good emotional punch in the gut. I really enjoyed the storyline. I felt it could have been stronger, the acting was fabulous. Honest and real.

Angelina Jolie bit off more than she could chew as writer/director/actor. The directing was fine, but the other two suffered. One of the worst movies I've ever seen.
  • Pretty & Painful

It's a goodlooking movie, how it could it not be with those two superstars glowing and glowering throughout 2 very long painful hours? But the writing is soap opera level and the story is very weak. You feel like Angie & Brad wanted a write off for a summer in France and this was a good excuse.

I thought this film was wonderful both actors/director are obviously influenced by foreign films. It was experimental, I think this could make for a great play. I'm sure if you're use to seeing these two in their regular suited films this would make one feel a bit uncomfortable. I like the complexity and embraced it.
